Welcome to Year 1
Teach children how they should live and they will remember it all their life.
Proverbs 22:6
A very warm welcome to the Y1 class page. We hope you find the following information useful. Regular updates are given via our page on Class Dojo. Should you have any questions, please contact the school office or send a message via Class Dojo.
Who is the Y1 Team?
Class Teacher: Miss Harvey
Teacher Assistants: Mrs Fletcher
The Y1 curriculum is fun and engaging. The children still learn through play and have access to continuous provision. Although, as the year moves on, a more formal approach to learning is adopted.
Religious Education in Y1
10% of curriculum time is set aside for the delivery of RE through the Come and See programme. Children are taught about how Jesus is present in our every day lives.
Reading in Y1
The children have access to an array of material to support their journey to become independent readers. We have a well stocked class library which the children enjoy choosing stories from. Throughout the day, we share stories together using picture books, chapter books and also stories from Reading Eggs. Opportunities from guided reading sessions take place during our Read, Write Inc lessons. We listen to the children read frequently throughout the school week. For our home reading material, we use the Read Write Inc ‘Book Bag Books’ alongside Oxford Reading Tree stories and Rigby Star books. Each child has their home reading material changed on a set day. If you are looking for ways to support your child’s reading further, please use the following links or get in touch and we can support you in any way possible.
Phonics in Y1
Nationally, all children take part in a phonics screening check in Y1. This takes place in June each year. Your child will be asked to read and blend words which are both ‘real’ and ‘alien’. You will receive notification of how your child has done, once the check is complete. We will attach information on our web page and on Class Dojo to explain this further. In previous years, we have held a parents meeting to explain this screening in more detail. Hopefully, this is something we can arrange.
Websites to support phonics:
Maths
In lessons we follow the White Rose Maths programme. More details can be found via the following link:
Science
We love to learn about the world around us and follow a rich and engaging Science curriculum, that promotes investigative skills.
Art and Design
Year 1 enjoy Art and Design lessons. We have learnt and refined lots of new skills already.
